Meetic Review

August 28th, 2006 by Tina

Meetic.com was Launched in 2002, but they already claim 17 million registered members. Whether this is correct or not is unclear, but the number seems quite high, especially when the membership on some more established sites is far less. You can browse member profiles before you create your own. However, only a small photo, the person’s age and location are shown. More detailed information, is only shown after you create your own profile.

The profiles created on Meetic are straightforward and full of useful information. You need to enter physical characteristics and there’s also a section where you can write something about yourself in your own words. Many additional features are also available, including voice greetings, compatibility tests and a live chat room. The site displays how many users are currently online and browsing the site.

Although originally a European site, Meetic has members worldwide. The site can also be displayed in Spanish, French, Italian and German by clicking on a language link, and there are links for specific countries, such as Meetic.fr, Meetic.be, and Meetic.de. Overall, it’s relatively easy to find your way around the site.

I really don’t understand why it’s necessary for Meetic to be so expensive, considering that they’re supposed to have more than 1 million active members. I’m sure their income is well beyond their expenses, so it ought to be possible to lower the prices and still have a reasonable income?

It is impossible to cancel your membership. I have been trying since june. They promise to send an email which you click on, to cancel, but it never does work. There is no facility to contact them within the site to discuss this issue. I am considering cancelling my credit card, as a last resort to stopping them taking the monthly payment. BE WARNED.

  3. Nicaribe Says:

I took a package for 3 months and I became a member on June, 2007. I sent the cancellation before it expired and another one on October, 2007. Meetic.com continue to charge me $ 29.70 dollars, but I can not get access to my account anymore, but Meetic are still charging me. I have been trying so many channels until someone can hear me. I really thought that getting into the dating service will be safe and fun, but I was wrong, and to cancel a membership it is so hard and difficult.

Please help to put an end on this.

  4. Nicaribe Says:

Please people! Tell me what to do to cancel my membership. I can not access to my account on Meetic, but I am paying for it. My nickname in Meetic is Nicaribe. Please, help me to cancel this membership!

  5. Julie Says:

Nicaribe, please send a valid e-mail address and I will send you the address for Meetic. The e-Mail you provided does not seem to work!

  6. Julie Says:

I joined for one month They have deducted a second subscription even though I have cancelled. What to do? Julie. I can not contact them.

  7. Nella Says:

Meetic is very very bad site. Once you have a profile on the site it’s impossible to clean (remove) your profile and photo. I wrote to the management, but my request to remove my profile was ignored. I still cannot and I do not know how to remove my profile. The impression I have is that Meetic is only interested in having as many profiles and photos on their site as possible, and they don’t care if the photos are genuine or not.

  8. Henry Says:

I need help too, I can’t cancel, does anyone knows how?

  9. Elsie Says:

I could not cancel my subscription too! I think I will have to cancel my credit card.

  10. Jason Says:

I am having a lot of problems contacting Meetic. I am also stuck in the same scenario in regards to canceling with meetic. Has anyone got a hold of Meetic?

  11. will Says:

Marc Simoncini is the greasy pimp running the site. It’s a pure scam gauged only to screw you with no means to cancel membership - he hides behide the shady regs of different EU countries and no one controls the practices of such cyber-maggots in the EU - you may need to cancel your credit cards to stop this worm from sucking you dry…

  12. Meetic member Says:

DatingDirect.com, a UK dating site, was taken over by Meetic last year. Now it seems that since this has happened a lot of people cannot cancel their subscription anymore and there is no way to access a customer support line yet. Sounds familiar? Is Meetic really a bad dating site, or have they just not got their act together yet?

  13. will Says:

Meetic is definately among the worst - in the gutter. Meetic continues to employ unethical means in order to bilk unsuspecting ’members’ out of vast sums of monthly ’membership’ fees by applying their ’automatic renewal’ feature to all who join - and then by providing NO MEANS by which to cancel. It’s like checking into Hotel California - you can sign in any time you like, ’but you can never leave’. Attempts at online help receive only automated responses which direct the ’member’ to either non-existant or non-funtional links to resolve the problem. Unless you want to resort to cancelling your credit cards to stop neverending ’automatic’ renewals, join one of the numerous LEGITIMATE sites.

  14. Rob S. Says:

Meetic.com takes payment by PayPal as well now. Anyone can set up a PayPal account. It’s pretty easy, and the advantage is that when you pay you don’t release your credit card details to potentially unscrupulous sellers. Plus you can cancel the subscription at any time, unlike a credit card, which you usually have to cancel when this happens.

  15. Jeff Says:

I wanted to delete the information in my personal ad, and MEETIC customer support either misconstrued my emails or something, I have no idea, but within 5 days of making a paid membership I have no access to my account, and no email is being sent to me to acknowledge this. I cannot access it and there is no link to customer support or email box to resolve this. This is unbelievable… that’s it, I’m done, they got my money and give me no service, no resolution, no nothing. I never saw the scam in the beginning. Somebody tell me how you make contact please. This cannot be truly how it works.

  16. Sam Says:

I have to say it is the same story here, they sent me an email with an offer of a trial for £1 which turns into full membership during this period. After two days I realized the site was shockingly bad, however could I cancel? Ooh could I ever, it was impossible to cancel automatic renewal or to contact their team. The cancel automatic renewal option was conveniently removed. I am considering sending them a summons now to get a refund of the £45 that I didn’t agree to pay for.

  17. Kel Says:

I’m going through the same thing - I subscribed for one month and within a day, I was unable to get into my account. So I created a bogus account to see if my original subscribed account is still on the site.

It’s vanished! I input my profile name via the search options which allow you to search by name, but it does not exist. They have deleted my profile. I can’t even contact them via the bogus profile - it just takes you to the upgrade page.

Has anyone got a telephone number or contact details for Meetic please?

I really don’t want to be charged monthly for a service I have never used.

  18. Vickie Says:

I agree. I was reading the terms and conditions of meetic and when I tried to back out, the screen froze for a few seconds. Two days later, my bank account had been hit for a 6 month subscription. I don’t even know how that can happen as I didn’t provide any banking information at all.

I was asked to verify the monetary path, which I did and now they have blocked my email and won’t receive questions from me. I got hold of Marc Simoncini (owner of site) email address and have been blocked there also after I sent two communications to him.

I am now faxing Marc each day and have also faxed to the Mayor of France in order to get someone to tell me who I can contact to get my money back.

I am assuming I’ll have to close my bank account and reopen a new one before they strike again at the end of six months. The best part is, when they first were responding to my email, they admitted they didn’t even have me in their system. And yet when it was proven they had taken my money, they blocked me.

  19. Kel Says:

Good news! I got a refund and cancelled my membership on Meetic.

I have written to the head office and complained. At the same time I created a lot of bogus profiles on the site, and in the description area I pasted my complaint letter. Sometimes they check what you post and an automatic e-mail comes back saying my description was not accepted. But they don’t always check, and I found my complaint letter was posted on to some of my bogus profiles.

So anyway I checked my account and out from nowhere it happened. I was able to cancel my membership and demand a refund which I have now received.

I suggest to anyone that you write a letter to the head office the address is:

    27 Old Gloucester Street,
    London,
    WC1N 3XX

If that does not work, try posting your complaint letter in the description of your profile. Staff usually check what is written before its posted. If they don’t respond to your letter then keep opening different bogus accounts until they do. They don’t want the bad publicity and as I say they don’t always monitor changes to every profile.

    Good luck!
