If you are like everyone else, you know that breakups are hard, especially if you did not want the breakup to happen. Unfortunately, things can stand in the way of a relationship, such as pride, jealousy, misunderstanding, selfishness and egos. Knowing what ended your relationship is important if you want to get your ex back.

Put away your pride.

If you can not admit you were wrong, even if you weren’t, then you will have little chance at getting your ex back. Both men and women need to know this because women are guilty of pride as well.

Sometimes, a simple “sorry” is all you need to say. Other times, you may have to do more. Either way, many people will take their ex back if they will admit they were wrong or agree to change. Therefore, it is important that you mean everything you say when trying to reconcile a relationship.

Stop being jealous

Women are notorious for being jealous, but many men struggle with jealousy as well. It is ok to be jealous if you have a good reason; for example, if your partner cheated on you or someone else in the past. Jealousy can cause either party to initiate the breakup.

Infidelity is not the only cause for jealousy. Many people get jealous of anything that takes their partner’s time away from them. This can include video games, computers, hobbies, and work.

If you want to get your ex back, but there are things in your life that make your ex jealous, you need to cut ties with anyone or anything that causes that jealousy. Additionally, if you are jealous for unnecessary reasons, stop being jealous.

Be more understanding

Misunderstandings cause many breakups. There are usually two reasons why misunderstandings occur. First, they may occur because one person is not willing to completely listen to everything that the other person says. Second, they may occur because one person has a hard time explaining how they feel. If your partner has a hard time explaining how he or she feels, you will have a hard time understanding exactly how they feel and what they mean.

If you want to get your ex back, you need to both listen to what he or she says and try to interpret the rest, as well as communicate how you feel.

Stop being selfish

Guys are notorious for being selfish, but women can often be just as guilty. Though selfishness shows in many ways, women have a hard time tolerating any single act of selfishness. If you are guilty of being selfish, then you need to make a conscious decision to change.

If you were selfish in the past, you may have a hard time getting your ex back. Your ex knows what kind of behavior you are capable of, thus he or she may have a hard time trusting what you say.

Hide your ego

Egos are not necessarily bad things; however, large egos are bad. Confidence stems from your ego, but arrogance and cockiness are typically the result of an inflated ego.

It is ok to have a sense of accomplishment, pride and joy, but be careful of how you present yourself to other people. If you act like no one else can meet your standards or no one is as great as you, chances are you won’t get your ex back.

If you want to get your ex back, you need to take all of these tips into consideration because you may be guilty of more than just one. However, since everyone is different, you may need to do other things before you can rekindle your relationship. Patience, determination, sincerity, and change are the keys to reconciling a broken relationship.

None of us wants to seem like we’re paranoid in our relationships. That’s a good thing. But, it is important to read signs when they’re glaring in front of you. There are some pretty definite signs that a person you’ve been dating is losing interest. If you’re seeing any of these four signs, there could be trouble on the horizon.

1.	Your partner is always busy. When weekend trips with ” the boys” or “girls nights out” become too frequent, it could be a sign that your partner isn’t interested in being with you. We all need a little “friend time”, even when we’re in a relationship, but if your partner suddenly has no time to spend with you, but lots for everyone else; that’s a problem.

2.	You’re not having sex. Assuming, of course, that you were having sex before; not having sex now is a clue that something is amiss.

3.	Your partner picks fights. Has your partner become super picky about everything you do or is he or she knowingly doing things to set you off? Maybe he or she is trying to pick a fight that could turn into a breakup fight.

4.	They never call. While it is perfectly normal for those “20 times a day” calls to reduce over a period of time, it’s also normal for couples to check in with each other. If your partner never checks in and never seems to have time to talk when you check in; there’s a reason.

One of the most difficult things to do after a relationship is over is to remain friends with your former spouse or partner. This can be a very complex matter, especially if the partnership ended through a court process with lawyers representing each party. We all realize that a lawyer’s sole purpose is to get the best deal possible for their client, so they may not be concerned in most cases, with the emotional bond that exists or existed before the relationship ended. They simply want what is best for their client, and it should come as no surprise that their own self interest is part of the equation.

Find a way to maintain a friendship

If a breakup isn’t the result of emotional or physical abuse, and the couple remains civil with each other, the best case scenario is to find a way to maintain a friendship. This is especially true when young children are involved. Children are very impressionable, especially at an early age, and can be manipulated intentionally or even unintentionally when one parent holds a grudge against the other. Sadly often in a broken down relationship, one parent will deliberately use a child as a pawn to turn them against the other parent.

Never use the children to try to hurt your ex partner

Whether it’s resentment due to jealousy or a means of revenge, attempting to hurt an ex partner emotionally or otherwise, is fundamentally wrong. Unfortunately this type of immature behavior may have a long term negative impact on a child, by being denied the opportunity to build a strong relationship with a responsible parent. Emotional warfare can easily backfire when the child reaches maturity and realizes they have been used for this destructive purpose. Then resentment towards the offending parent is very likely to take place and may not be reversible.

Try to maintain a sense of security and stability for the children

What adults sometimes forget is that their children are also dealing with a divorce, and can be harboring fears of what may happen in the future, after their parents separate. This is why it is fundamentally important to remain on good terms with your ex in order to maintain a sense of security, especially for younger children. It is also very difficult for children to take sides in a dispute between parents, as they are emotionally attached to both. For this reason, and no matter how difficult it is, parents must strive to respect one another in order to reinforce a balanced relationship with each other and their children, as they grow older.

Meeting someone else

Eventually, both separated individuals are likely to meet another person and begin a new relationship. Hopefully if a separated couple has been open and honest and shown respect towards each other, this should be a smooth transition period. However, it’s also a little more complicated now that one has to consider their new partner’s feelings about an ongoing relationship with an ex wife or husband. There isn’t a secret formula for the success of a relationship, however the key to maintaining a happy one means building trust. One must tell their new partner that the former relationship is truly over and the reason for keeping in contact is solely for the purpose of maintaining a good relationship with their children.

Honesty and communication build trust, and if two people share this view, they may avoid the mistakes of the past and create a successful happy new life together.

Last month we talked about how to decide if a relationship is not working. This month we’re going to give some tips for actually making the break if you’ve made the decision that the relationship isn’t going well. It’s never easy, but if you follow these rules, you should be able to make a clean break without too much drama.

Don’t break up in a public place – It is inconsiderate to take someone on a date to break up with them. If your date becomes upset, you may both be embarrassed if you’re in public. Ask to come over to their home and talk, instead.

Don’t break up with a letter or email – That just proves you’re a coward. If you’ve been dating the person, you owe them the courtesy of telling them face to face.

Be kind, but be honest – Don’t say “It’s not you; it’s me”, or any of those other tired clichés. Tell your partner the truth; but do it in a kind and compassionate way. They are sure to appreciate your honesty and respect your courage.

Don’t call it a “break” – Saying “we need to take a break” is just a way of breaking up without actually saying so. If you know that you want the break to be permanent, just say so.

It’s always disappointing when we find that the person we’re dating is just not the “one” for us. But, at some time or another, most of us will be in the position of thinking we want out of a relationship, and we need to know how to make the decision. Sometimes it’s pretty easy to know it’s time to get out, but other times we’re torn. To help make it easier to decide what to do, ask, yourself these questions:

What exactly is bothering me about the relationship?
Some issues are ones we can work with while others are “deal breakers”. For example, if your issue includes a big difference in basic values, such as ethics or honesty, you may have no option but to end the relationship. However, if your problem is that your partner works too much, there might be hope. You may just need to talk to your partner and see if they’re willing to change some habits to fix the problem.

How do I feel about the person?
If you’ve fallen in love with the person, you’ll likely be more willing to resolve differences than if the relationship is still casual. Taking the time to honestly ascertain your level of attachment can help avoid regretting your decision if you end the relationship.

Am I being realistic?
Take an honest look at your expectations in a partner and in a relationship. If you are constantly breaking up with the people you’re seeing because they don’t meet your expectations, then perhaps your relationship expectations are unrealistic. You’re never going to find someone who is perfect, so be sure you don’t let go of a quality relationship because you think “something better might come along”.

Am I prepared to make a clean break?
If you’re thinking about breaking up to get more attention from your partner, or to get them to work harder on the relationship, then you should rethink your plans. If you break up to get attention, your plan may well backfire.

Next month, we’ll look at how to deliver break up news.
<!--

Social networking websites are an integral part of today’s online dating scene, both as resources for finding potential partners and communication tools for sharing relationship information with your circle of friends. All of this connectivity is generally a pretty good thing, at least as long as your relationship is in good standing.

But what happens if your relationship ends? How have Facebook and other social networking websites influenced the way people break up in today’s world?

It’s not unheard of for one person to break up with their partner via Facebook rather than doing it face to face. As cold as that seems, for some people it seems perfectly natural to use social networking for that purpose; they use it for all of their other communication purposes, so why not use it to end a relationship?

Even if the break up does occur face to face, Facebook and other social networking sites often create situations where the hurt (and hurtful actions) can continue to go back and forth for a very long time. How quickly does he change his status to single? How fast does she take down the pictures of him from her page? When will either of them post new pictures of a new love interest, and how will each of them react to this action? And we haven’t even begun to talk about the issue of friends choosing sides over whatever happened to cause the relationship to end.

Overall, the best advice I can give you is to avoid using Facebook or any other social networking website to break up with a partner or to get back at a partner following a break up. Although it might be very tempting, keep in mind that the hurt this approach can cause will nearly always create even more issues and problems down the road.
<!--

The world is full of songs (some good, some bad) about breaking off relationships for all kinds of reasons. If only it were as easy as some of them make it out to be! The reality is that you’re probably going to go through several different potential partners before finding that really special one, so sooner or later you’re going to have to face up to it.

You’re just not feeling it with a particular person and you want to break it off – now what?

Breaking up is hard to do (my apologies to Neil Sedaka) but it’s not impossible to do if you go about it the right way. While there’s no single “best” way to end it and move on, there are some general things to keep in mind:

1. Be honest. This is really, really, really hard to do. It’s tough to honestly tell someone you’re not interested in seeing them anymore, so it’s tempting to make something up. Don’t give in to this temptation because it’s only going to end up badly. It’s far better to open a conversation, share your honest feelings, and exit the situation gracefully.

2. Do it in person. Sometimes this isn’t possible, but if you can do it in person that’s the best choice. This doesn’t mean spending a long evening together and then springing it on the other person at the end, but it does mean having the courage to say what you need to say to his or her face.

3. Never burn a bridge. Old advice for sure, but still valid in today’s world. Never end a relationship by saying or doing mean things to the other person, even if it’s really, really tempting to do so. It’s a small dating world out there, and if you treat someone badly during a break up I can almost guarantee it will come back to haunt you at some point.
<!--

If you’re in a relationship right now that’s not making you happy, maybe it’s time to take some advice from the current economic crisis and FIRE your significant other.

That’s right. If they’re not doing their job and you’re not interested in waiting for them to learn to change, it’s time to give them the boot, a pink slip, a kick in the behind.

It’s time to get fired up to do some firing.

Make a list of their offenses – Before you talk to your soon to be ex, it’s time to sit and think about what you don’t like about them or about the way they are in the relationship.

Make a list of their good qualities – But if you’re going to at least give your significant other a chance of saying with you, you need to think about the redeeming qualities they have too. You might be surprised at how much you do like.

Think about a trial run – Just like a poor performance review, you might want to give your significant other a second chance to improve within a certain time frame. If they don’t improve, they’re gone.

Firing your significant other sounds harsh, and maybe it is. But if you’re not happy, it’s time to downsize your relationship.
<!--

If you date, you will breakup with someone at some point. It’s not a pretty thing, but it’s reality. After all, if you don’t break up with someone, you’re simply staying in a relationship you don’t enjoy.

Or you’re marrying them. Here are some ways to make a breakup easier:

Be quick – There’s no need to give a long and drawn out explanation for the reasons why you need to say goodbye. Just say it’s over, give a short explanation and walk away.

Be honest – There’s no need to be mean, but you should always be honest when you break up with someone. Lying isn’t going to help them or you get over this transition any quicker.

Be in public – Make sure you break up with someone when you’re out and about, not over the phone or over email. Those are cowardly and they can often be messages that are spread to others. Do it in person.

Be kind – This is a person you though you could really care about, so think about how it would feel if the tables were turned. How would you want to be treated?

The reality of dating is that 99% of all your relationships are going to fail or they’re just not going to work out. So, breaking up is just a part of this cycle. And each breakup means you’re getting closer to the one that steals your heart.

Why didn’t he/she call? You seemed to really hit it off, there was playful banter, even some touching and canoodling. So, why didn’t you get that call for a second date?

First of all, it’s probably not your fault. You just didn’t know the ‘rules.’ (No, not those other rules.)

Rule #1 – Don’t get too personal

While you might want to profess your entire life story to this new person, it’s not generally the best idea. So, leave the stories about your exes at home and try to talk about them instead.

Rule #2 – Don’t be rude

Always bring enough money to pay, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, don’t talk with your mouth open, etc. All of those manners that your mother tried to teach you? Use them. And don’t even think about arguing that ‘Well, this is just the way I am.’ It’s still rude and it’s certainly not going to win you any points.

Rule #3 – Don’t try to be crazy

Somewhere along the line, the idea that quirky = good got passed along to singles around the world. So, people began to try to be overly funny or weird as they thought it might appeal to a prospective partner.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

Being odd, if that’s a part of your personality, is fine, but being weird for the sake of being weird – not so great. Leave your singing of the names on the menu and rhyming everything that you say at home, locked far away from sunlight.

Be yourself!
