Is it almost time to retire online dating with the Walkman and the hula hoop? Some critics think that it just might be. With the ever-present lying about one’s age, appearance, and even interests, online dating can be a world where you’re not sure who you’re talking to. Are you’re falling for a real person or a fantasy? But is that enough to dismiss online dating entirely?
I don’t think so.
Online dating allows people to stop getting in the way of what they want – true happiness, companionship, and perhaps even love. Behind the veil of the Internet, users can feel free to talk about their innermost desires and ideas without fear of in-person rejection. The anonymity online dating provides creates a safe system of talking with someone else, if even just for the entertainment of it.
What online dating also provides is a good way for people to try out the dating market after they’ve been gone for a while. It allows the user to feel more confident in what they can expect in these times. When people are open and uninhibited in response, it can create a new level of relationship that they might not have achieved otherwise.
But the true goal of online dating isn’t to remain online – it’s to meet up in person. As a springboard into that final frontier, online dating is making more people ready for the dating world, rather than less. Those that wouldn’t go out to bars and clubs in the first place can get their feet wet online.

DatingDirect.com, now owned my Meetic, is a UK focused dating site, although it is open to international members. They boast over 3 million active members.
The site can be navigated with ease. Simply input which country you are in, who you are looking for and where, and your matches will appear. If you are not keen on long-distance relationships, a handy feature is being able to specify your postal code, so that you can narrow your search to people who live within a reasonable distance.
Most of the picture profiles are of good quality, and all content is moderated before appearing on the web site, so you shouldn’t be presentened with content that’s offensive or in bad taste.

Amoureux.com offers a free dating service. However, I found the initial registration a little frustrating. I kept getting redirected to different parts of the site. I spent several minutes filling out the form to try and get some more information, but I was then greeted with a message “Sorry, not posted yet!”. Why won’t a site make details known before you register with them?
The profile requires you to enter information on two separate screens. I bypassed some of the details and finally a profile was created. When I browsed through other profiles they were vague too. Perhaps this is the reason.
The site has a good chat section, listed by home country, age, sex, and what languages each participant speaks. The chatrooms don’t appear to be monitored, so be prepared for adult topics. After browsing for a while, I came across a woman looking for a husband – not even a date!
When searching for people, you can pick any location in the world. There may not be any nearby matches, but the option is there. Clicking on the search categories can be a little tricky. You have to select who you are looking for and what they want instead of just saying you are seeking a male or female.
