Want to Rekindle an Old Flame?

September 6th, 2007

Admit it. You have a MySpace page because you’re hoping against all hope that your old flame is going to try to find you. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. This unconventional way to find the love of your life isn’t something new, but it is the modern day equivalent of stalking someone without leaving your home. Instead of following them from work to home and then calling them only to hang up, you can follow around your old flames with online dating sites.

And what’s even funnier about it is that these sites aren’t actually set up to be dating sites, as such. But they’re working out what way.

But does it work? Sometimes, it certainly does. If you’re single, why not try to message your old flame to see what he or she is up to? It can’t hurt and if they never respond, that’s no loss to you. But if they do respond, you might be able to restart an old conversation.

Chances are high that one of you is going to be in a relationship, making something new a bit tricky or even impossible, so you need to be ready for these situations as well. But when you’re both single, online dating through networking sites like MySpace, Facebook, and others is a good way to find out just who else might be looking for you too.

Are We All Racists When It Comes To Dating?

May 17th, 2007

With every type of niche now being filled by new online dating services, there are many sites appearing that offer online communities and matchmaking services for ethnic groups such as black people, Asians or Hispanics. So what’s the point of these dating services for specific racial groups, and do they offer you anything more than conventional personals sites such as Match.com or eHarmony?

Well it all depends on what expectations you have. These sites are ideal if you are the type of person who knows exactly what you are looking for, and you have a strong preference for meeting people of the same cultural background. This is not such a bad thing – relationship experts have long said that we are drawn to people who are similar to us, and all things being equal, such relationships have a better chance of success than ones of couples from different cultural backgrounds.

Women have been found to have a significantly stronger preference for relationships with men from the same racial background, while men appear to be less fussy about cultural roots. Studies of speed daters found that women were much more likely to ‘turn-down’ men of different racial backgrounds than men of the same race as themselves. This was found to be true for women of various racial backgrounds.

While most dating websites offer some kind filtering system that lets members find other members of a certain ethnic origin, many niche sites have sprung up recently to cater specifically to certain ethnic communities. The larger ethnic sites, such as BlackSingles.com are doing extremely well, and are now among the most visited dating sites in the US.

If you are considering using an “ethnically themed” site it is always best to choose one with a reasonably large membership since the number of members in some of the niche sites can be relatively low.

While most members of such sites are from the same cultural background, it’s worth remembering that such sites usually welcome members of all races and colors.

Found the right one? What do you do now?

December 13th, 2006

While other dating websites focus on getting you to meet Mr. or Miss Right, what do you do if you’ve already found them? You need a strategy for making sure that you’re giving your relationship the best chance it can have.

  • Do unto others – While this phrase might seem cliched by now, you really need to remember that the things you like are also probably the things that your new partner likes. For example, if you like doors held open for you or a date that shows up on time, why not provide them with the same behavior?
  • Remember the date – Things like birthdays anniversaries, and holidays become special times to celebrate with someone else. Try to use these specials days to your relationship advantage. Buy small gifts or write a meaningful card – every little bit helps.
  • Make them smile – While life isn’t always happy and exciting, making sure to keep the humor in your relationship will do more than you think is possible. Try to keep some problems or complaints to yourself so that you can focus on the positives in the world as well as your relationship.
  • Get away from each other – You don’t have to spend every waking hour together and it’s generally good advice not to. Try to have your own separate interests outside of your relationship in order to keep things exciting.
