Why You’re NOT Getting Asked Out Again

August 9th, 2008

Why didn’t he/she call? You seemed to really hit it off, there was playful banter, even some touching and canoodling. So, why didn’t you get that call for a second date?

First of all, it’s probably not your fault. You just didn’t know the ‘rules.’ (No, not those other rules.)

Rule #1 – Don’t get too personal

While you might want to profess your entire life story to this new person, it’s not generally the best idea. So, leave the stories about your exes at home and try to talk about them instead.

Rule #2 – Don’t be rude

Always bring enough money to pay, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, don’t talk with your mouth open, etc. All of those manners that your mother tried to teach you? Use them. And don’t even think about arguing that ‘Well, this is just the way I am.’ It’s still rude and it’s certainly not going to win you any points.

Rule #3 – Don’t try to be crazy

Somewhere along the line, the idea that quirky = good got passed along to singles around the world. So, people began to try to be overly funny or weird as they thought it might appeal to a prospective partner.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

Being odd, if that’s a part of your personality, is fine, but being weird for the sake of being weird – not so great. Leave your singing of the names on the menu and rhyming everything that you say at home, locked far away from sunlight.

Be yourself!

So, What are the Online Dating Rules?

May 7th, 2008

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a rule book that came along with your online dating membership? Remember that when flirting online, getting hit on three times means that you should go on a date with the prospective suitor. Calling before the next date seems needy, etc.

But there isn’t a rule book. You simply figure out what you need to do along the way.

There are three simple rules that you should follow if you want to not only be successful in your online dating, but to also be a popular person to hook up with:

1. Be open to everyone – This is not the time to be picky. Give everyone a chance, but dismiss those that don’t appeal to you.

2. Take a chance – You will need to meet people IRL (in real life) after a while. Be the one to make that date and to follow through on seeing if you have chemistry in the real world too.

3. Realize that someone is out there – If you’re automatically assuming that no one is going to suit you, you’re right. But if you keep in mind that there is someone out there looking for someone like you, you’re right too.

Okay, other rules that I think are pretty obvious? Be clean, brush your teeth, and NEVER be late to a date. But you already knew these, right? Right?

Been Out of the Dating Game for a While?

May 15th, 2007

The truth is that with people living longer and divorce numbers rising, more people are returning to the dating game than ever. And this new breed of baby boomer daters is finding that the rules have changed for them.

Dating for those that are back in ‘the game’ has become more complicated. Not only do you have to worry about online safety, but you also have to learn about how to use the online dating systems that are now the hottest place to meet someone new.

It’s a whole different scene.

But that doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun doing it. Daters that are just coming back to the problem of finding a new date need to keep these things in mind:

  1. If you don’t meet a person in person, they might not be who they say they are.
  2. You CAN meet a good person online, if you’re honest and open to talking with others
  3. Get to know someone before you meet them in person
  4. If you have anything that you do not like or do not want in a date, be sure to say so.

Though you might not have someone to set you up with the perfect man or woman, you can play your own matchmaker with online dating. Just be clear about what you want (and what you don’t want) to find the right person for you.

Sure, the rules have changed, and the playing field has become a little scarier, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun along the way.
