As the name of the site suggests, BeautifulPeople is a site who’s aim is to bring together people based on their looks alone. The site has a voting system whereby prospective members must submit a good quality photo of themselves and wait while other members vote them in or out. This brutal initiation, the site owner claims, ensures that only the most attractive people are let into the site. Only about 1 in 5 are accepted. This format is not new. DarwinDating has similar access restrictions.
The site is free to join and to post your picture. However, in order to view the voting process and initially access the site, you need to pay a fee of $1.99. This lets you see how other members are voting. Apart from its joining restrictions, the site offers the usual range of features such as mail, searching and forums.

I'll make this brief. There are two classifications of paid membership: platinum and élite. Free members can only send winks and they cannot reply to platinum members. As most people are free members, the platinum membership is of questionable value. To become an élite member for one isolated month (the monthly rate is cheaper with a 6-month contract), it will cost around £28. This takes the cost of use into the territory of premium dating sites with huge databases and fairly even gender ratios.
The reply rate is extremely low and the member forums within the site are full of posts exclaiming, "is anyone here?". I would say that the typical man on a hook-up site will get more responses than a man of beautifulpeople.com. This means that men will get far more responses on dating/ non-niche sites, some of which are free.
This site is so exclusive, that it has strangled messages.
