Facebook is an extremely popular social networking site whose membership runs into the millions. Its founders conceived of Facebook while still college students at Harvard University in Massachusetts. Initially, the site was just a social networking tool for the use of students at Harvard. Its popularity spread, and by the end of 2004, Facebook was used by colleges all over the United States. Today, Facebook enjoys international popularity, primarily among the young--among college students and recent college graduates. As more and more young people and college students begin to expand their social networks through Facebook, the site's popularity stands only to grow.
The use of Facebook is still free, which is no doubt part of the reason for the site's ongoing popularity. To this day, the site makes its (significant) profits almost exclusively from advertising. Although it has grown to include many new features since its inception, the basic formula is still the same. Users create personal profiles with lists of their favorite books, movies, and music groups, as well as any contact information that they wish to share. After having created a personal profile, users search for the profiles of friends who are also Facebook users. Over time, Facebook users expand their network of Facebook friends, with whom they can communicate using an ever-expanding arsenal of programs and features.
Facebook was originally designed with the individual in-mind, in later years it was expanded to enable organizations, bands, businesses and other types of groups to create a presence there. The site has become so important, that it’s become the primary channel for which many organizations reach-out to their audience.
Although originally intended for networking with friends and colleagues, there are certainly a great many people there looking for romantic and other non-platonic connections. The powerful search facilities and the vast number of participants open up a wealth of possibilities for meeting, and therefore was inevitable that the two would come together at some point. There have been a number of dating companies offering Facebook applications, as well as connection via Facebook accounts. These are intended to appeal to those who are there to find a partner. Zoosk offers a popular application that lets members connect with each other either through their Facebook account or directly on the site. Often, these applications draw on information provided in Facebook to match them with other people nearby or who may have common personality-traits.
