Friends Reunited
FriendsReunited actually consists of three separate sites; a social network, a dating site, and a family history site called Genes Reunited. On signing up to the main site (FriendsReunited), you will be given the option to create an account on the dating and genes sites as well. Those interested in dating only may wish to read the separate review on "FriendsReunited Dating" After filling in the registration form, you’ll be immediately prompted to create a “friends network”. This can be skipped until later or you can immediately start searching for people by places including schools, university, workplaces, street addresses, as well as other locations such as pubs and clubs.
Once you’ve entered the site, you’ll see it’s organized into separate areas: Friends, Places, Groups, and Games.
Friends
The site offers a number of ways in which you can find friends to add to your network. You can search for friends directly by choosing the “Find Friends” tab. This lets you search for people by name. To refine your search further, you can also provide an age-range, and select a location. You’ll be presented with a list of people matching your search options, and from there you can send them “friend requests”, or send them an email. If their settings allow, you can also post a public message on their profile page. You may also receive your own friend request from others. You can approve or decline these from your “My Friends” page.
As well as friends, you can also add family members under a separate heading. Family members can view private data within your profile. Much like Facebook, you can adjust the privacy settings for your account, and specify exactly who can see what information on your profile. On creating an account, the initial setting will allow everyone to view your profile in its entirety. So if you’re shy or privacy conscious, it’s best to modify these settings quickly to allow only invitees (friends and family) to view your personal information.
Your Profile
Your profile can be complemented with photos, videos and additional information of interest as you choose. It’s also possible to create a Timeline, specifying certain dates of importance in your life, such as the birth of children, attendance of schools or colleges, or moving house. You can also create your own blog, an online diary, where you can post updates and information for your friends and family to read.
Places
The quick search, located at the top of the page, lets you find places or people. You can add places you’ve attended for example, schools, colleges, universities, even armed services to your profile. Once you’ve found what you’re looking for, you can join a “place” and find out about other people who also have an interest in it. Places have their own pages; and from there you can see its followers as well as details about reunions, browse teachers (for places of study) or staff (for businesses). Some places even have photos and videos, and their own message boards.
Groups
These are forums grouped into different topics and categories. It’s possible to search for groups by category, and enter one in order to take part either in live discussions through the chat system, or by posting messages on the message board.
Games
The site offers a number of flash-based online games, however some of these can be quite slow to load. While the games are free, additional play may require tokens. You’ll earn 200 tokens each day just by existing on the site. Additional tokens can be gained by completing additional sections on your profile.
In summary
FriendsReunited is available to anyone anywhere, but it is really geared to people living in the UK. The site is free, however you'll have to navigate a lot of advertisments while there. While it’s nowhere near the size of international sites such as Facebook and Badoo, UK members may find it is of more relevance to them due to its regional theme.
