Friendster

Friendster is a social networking site that lets you stay in touch with old friends or find new ones. It’s possible to search for people you went to school or college with or find long lost loves. The site is free to join, and you can create your own customized profile and blog.

Friendster

One of the Internet's first popular social networking sites, Friendster.com has had a long and exciting history. Founded in 2002 in Mountain View, CA, the site gradually became an international phenomenon and gradually transferred its main user base to Asia and, in particular, India and the Philippines. It is currently still popular in these countries with many people there having an account. The site is notable for its dedicated team of programmers and users and constantly developing and adding new features. But its popularity has been waning over the last few years, as its users are likely moving to much bigger social sites like Facebook.

In addition to giving members the ability to create a profile, upload photos and videos, post in personal blogs, and create networks of friends, Friendster.com boasts a unique "web of friends" apparatus for which the site was given a patent in 2006. This apparatus traces the pathways whereby disparate individuals are connected to one another through social networks. Using the "web of friends" mechanism, any Friendster member can see how he or she is connected to any other Friendster member--through however many different links among friends, and however many degrees of separation.
