Meetic.com

Meetic is a relative newcomer to the online dating scene. Launched in 2002, they already boast of having 17 million people on their site. Whether it's a typo or not is yet to be known, but the number seems high, especially when older and established sites are much lower. Browsing on their site is allowed before a profile is created. However, only a thumbnail photo, age and location are shown for information. To get more detailed profiles, you then have to create your own.The profiles created on Meetic are straightforward and full of good information. All of the physical characteristics need to be filled in and there is a section to write in your own words.

Multiple options are available, including voice greetings, compatibility tables and a live chat room. The site shows how many users are currently online and browsing the site. Meetic is a European site though has members worldwide. They also offer Spanish, French, Italian and German versions of the site by clicking on a special link. Overall the site is relatively easy to navigate.

I see you all had terrible experiences, but I have to say I have met my lovely husband on Meetic, neither of us had any problems cancelling the services and we are obviously very satisfied customers, without Meetic we would not have the wonderful life we and our families are now enjoying. It was amazing, they matched us up to a T, we even share the same birthday, we are soul-mates and were in love from day one, the first time I spoke to my husband on the phone I knew I was going to marry him, this was four years ago and we will be married three years next March( on the 21st which is also our ... birthday). It is a real fairy tell story, I recommend internet dating to anyone, who wants to find love, what are the chances of finding Mr. Right in the Pub ?

I needed to leave the site and had no problem at all. I rung the required number and my membership was cancelled and my profile taken off I thought it good service. Thank you Meetic.

Shock horror, is what I feel reading these comments as I'm having the same experience! I joined for free this site in June and forgot about it, then looked at it again, there was a special offer in my in box for £4.99 for the month, I took it. The very next day I couldn't log on again like others said it says cannot recognise username password. This site is a total scam and there are legal ways to get it shut down, I will investigate on Monday with my solicitor. I then created several other sites to see if maybe it was my computer, and one by one this happened again in 24 hours. Like most of you I tried in vain to reach a customer service person, the site is rigged to send you around in circles!! I think maybe of the people on the site are genuine but some don't realise they are being scammed. I'm very concerned about the payment situation and not being able to cancel. I'm going to try and get my fiver back but most importantly stop any payment at my bank ahead of time! Keep you posted on all fronts. I did get contacted by some very nice guys who were paying members but I think they ' meetic' delete content on private emails as it was weird no one contacted me on my private email.

Meetic.com is a bad dating site. There is no way to remove a profile, no customer services online, I can only view a profile once, after that, I can't view anymore new profiles, unless I pay to view more.....that sucks!!! It’s funny how whatever you click it seem to take you straight to the subscribe page and it can't be return by clicking "back" button, it seem to be stuck in that page forever that is how bad it is.. I think you people should ask for your money back and dump that site for good...I'm sure there are tons of other dating sites which are better and easier to use without any complications. Save the headache really. Cheers

I subscribed for one month only at the special rate of £4.99. I spoke to advisor on the phone, & I had an email confirming there would be no automatic renewal. They have taken my money £44.97 and I’m off the site.

I did not actually join the paid membership so never met anyone but got lots of hopeless emails from people they thought I would be interested in - which I usually deleted. I joined as I thought I was going to spend some time living in Europe, and joined the Spanish site in 2006 (but never signed up for a paid subscription and forgot all about it). I cannot find a link to remove the profile and my photo which I want off there immediately. I think I will try writing to the head office as emails don’t seem to work. Frustrating.

I am very disappointed that the automatic renewal kicked in even before the expiration date of my Meetic pass. This is ridiculous! I sent emails to meetic@meetic.com but there was no reply. I am going to post my complaints in my profile.

I put in a profile that they wouldn't let me cancel and tried to contact them repeatedly. They've cancelled my account. That seemed to work.

Try filing a complaint at FTC Complaint Assistant.

I'm having the same problem. Shouldn't there be a way to file a complaint to have the website shut down?

Meetic is full of weirdoes who are very impolite. I just merely said to an English man that he was not courteous and had no education. I was banned from the site three days ago. I do not care for it was just not interesting.

Unfortunately that isn't enough. My credit card company has just informed me that even if I cancel my card I will still be liable for any charges applied to it as a result of subscriptions I have entered into. Therefore it is my responsibility to ensure that any such subscriptions are cancelled.

I have cancelled my subscription using the option on the site, but have little faith in that, so have also requested a written confirmation from them.

Today (24th Aug. 2008), I looked at my bank statement online and there are three charges from Meetic (8/21 - $39.99, 8/21 - $119.94, 8/22 - $39.99). I had never even heard of Meetic. I've never been a member of their site or authorized any payment to them for anything! They've obviously stolen my Visa Check Card number from somewhere and are posting bogus charges to my account. These people need to be stopped. Like everyone else here, I looked on their site for a place to contact without success except for the email from a non-member, which they tell you, is not a priority! Guess I'll call my bank first thing in the morning.

Good news! I got a refund and cancelled my membership on Meetic.

I have written to the head office and complained. At the same time I created a lot of bogus profiles on the site, and in the description area I pasted my complaint letter. Sometimes they check what you post and an automatic e-mail comes back saying my description was not accepted. But they don't always check, and I found my complaint letter was posted on to some of my bogus profiles.

So anyway I checked my account and out from nowhere it happened. I was able to cancel my membership and demand a refund which I have now received. I suggest to anyone that you write a letter to the head office the address is:

    27 Old Gloucester Street,
    London,
    WC1N 3XX

If that does not work, try posting your complaint letter in the description of your profile. Staff usually check what is written before its posted. If they don't respond to your letter then keep opening different bogus accounts until they do. They don't want the bad publicity and as I say they don't always monitor changes to every profile.

    Good luck!

I agree. I was reading the terms and conditions of meetic and when I tried to back out, the screen froze for a few seconds. Two days later, my bank account had been hit for a 6 month subscription. I don't even know how that can happen as I didn't provide any banking information at all.

I was asked to verify the monetary path, which I did and now they have blocked my email and won't receive questions from me. I got hold of Marc Simoncini (owner of site) email address and have been blocked there also after I sent two communications to him.

I am now faxing Marc each day and have also faxed to the Mayor of France in order to get someone to tell me who I can contact to get my money back.

I am assuming I'll have to close my bank account and reopen a new one before they strike again at the end of six months. The best part is, when they first were responding to my email, they admitted they didn't even have me in their system. And yet when it was proven they had taken my money, they blocked me.

I'm going through the same thing - I subscribed for one month and within a day, I was unable to get into my account. So I created a bogus account to see if my original subscribed account is still on the site. It's vanished! I input my profile name via the search options which allow you to search by name, but it does not exist.

They have deleted my profile. I can't even contact them via the bogus profile - it just takes you to the upgrade page. Has anyone got a telephone number or contact details for Meetic please? I really don't want to be charged monthly for a service I have never used.
