OKCupid
OK Cupid is a relative newcomer in the world of dating, but is growing by leaps and bounds. They already have around 3-million users, and this ranks them one of the top dating sites in the world. While Plentyoffish is still significantly larger, with around 6-million active users, the modern layout and wealth of features you’ll find at OkCupid are the likely reasons for its growing popularity.
Joining the site
The site remains free for all users. Creating a profile is quick and easy and will gain you access to the majority of features. An optional upgrade, to A-List status, is available and this grants certain extra privileges in addition to those enjoyed by basic users. It’s also possible to purchase a membership upgrade, as a gift, for any other member on the site.
The site lists personal profiles for single, gay and bi individuals from all over the United States and many other countries. Each profile has a description of what they are looking for, who they are, what interests they have and the ability to post pictures. You can search by location, or you can pick a hotlist of the most active and newest members from around the country. The panel on the left will suggest profiles “you might like” according to your settings.
Services and features
OKCupid is a technology-rich site. The range of options and features can be a little overwhelming at first. Nevertheless, most features are easy to get the hang of once tried. The layout is a little unconventional. Searches are made by selecting the “Matches button”. Here, two alternative searches can be found, namely “Match Search”, and “Quick Match”.
Quick Match
Choosing Quick Match lets the site’s matchmaking system select members who might be a good choice for you. This option will display photos one-after-another. You can rate, save or skip to the next photo. For those who have low-speed internet connections, QuickMatch can actually become SlowMatch since the detailed graphics in the photo gallery can take a long-time to display.
Match Search
This is the site’s all-in-one search system. Here you can choose the profiles you want quickly using the drop downs at the top of the page. The first lets you choose gender and sexual preference, the next age range, and the third lets you specify their location. Initially, the search will show members within 25 miles of your home town. To change this, just type the name of a city or town in the “Near…” box and you’ll be shown people living near your chosen location.
MatchSearch provides a number other ways to really narrow your search down to every last detail. The advanced option let’s you choose physical attributes of your match such as eye-color and height as well as who they are looking for.
Items highlighted in red are only available to paying members. Saving searches is also available to paying members.
To get the most out of the matchmaking tools, it’s necessary to have a complete profile. In case your profile is a little “thin” in some areas, you’ll be prompted at various times to “improve you matches”. This will enable you to add more specific information about yourself, and the type of person you’re looking for.
Treasure Tests and the Toy Bin
OkCupid offers several online games and test that are there for enjoyment as well as learning. MyBestFace is a unique tool that lets you discover your ideal photograph.
To take part, you’ll need to upload several photos of yourself and also rate other people’s photos. The final report will show you how different user-groups rated your different photos and collectively which they thought was the best one.
There are also numerous personality and dating persona tests for you to take and examine of other users.
Concluding
OkCupid is one of the most feature-rich sites available and this is even more remarkable when one considers the site is free. It is more popular with the younger crowd and will appeal to those who enjoy the latest gadgets and gizmos.

Ok cupid mess up half the time. They will block your profile without a cause. They also will delete you off there for no reason. They don't reply back to you when you send them any emails .Ok cupid suck bad.
@Chris I found this letter interesting because it points up a couple of issues:
One is that a false profile was posted, using photos of a male model, so we can assume that if it happened once, it has probably happened other times too.
Another issue raised is that of the male/female ratio, which there has been a lot of conjecture about. OkCupid has claimed 59% of members are male, but the membership tends to think otherwise. My guess would be two-thirds are male, but I've heard guesses up to a ratio of 5 to 1 (male dominated).
And finally, we read in this letter that some males have an awful lot of trouble meeting women through this site.
I have used OkCupid on and off for several years and can honestly say that this website is full of shallow women. You will not have any success sending messages to women unless you are at least 6 feet tall and gorgeous. I know this is the case because I am an intelligent, honest and caring guy who is funny and employed in a career earning 90k a year, but because I am 5 foot 8 and not so good looking, women never reply to my messages.
I don't choose women who are too hot for me, nor young party girls. I send many many messages to women who are age appropriate, who are intelligent and seem down to earth. My messages are short, funny and flirty and - most importantly - show that I read her profile and that we have some things in common. Yet, after hundreds of messages, I have never had a women reply to me.
Out of frustration, I created a fake profile on OkCupid and posted pictures of a male model and set his height to 6 foot 2. Without even sending a single message as this unrealistically hot guy, dozens of women were falling all over each other to get his attention. Even if his profile makes him sound like a self-centered jerk who cheats on his gf, women ignored those major personality flaws and even offered their phone numbers, unsolicited.
Bottom line is, OkCupid does not work for men shorter than 6 feet tall who aren't gorgeous. Tall and beautiful men have no problems getting women on the site, and I believe even homely women can find an interested male. But short and not-so-good-looking men don't have a chance, no matter what their personality is like.
All this site did for me was waste hours answering questions that left me with matches that did not respond. What is the point of even matching someone if you aren't going to follow through? The site seemed like a game. It is heavily focused on answering the questions to fill a bar that tells you how "complete" your profile is, which seems to never fill up and never runs out of questions. The few responses I got were rude and obnoxious. One going as far as to comment on my facial hair and how she refuses to date men with beards. For starters I can easily shave and second if you're that shallow on a dating site you deserve to be alone. In short, people's lives and emotions are not games unlike this atrocity of a site.
A colleague at work suggested me this site and quite frankly I should have knew that much earlier. The lower rating is due to the disappointment of not having as many people responding even though it is free. But it is better than the other sites I've being so far.
Personally, I love this site because it's casual. I can meet some here because I want to be friends, because I just want a hook-up or because I want something serious. Unlike most online dating sites this one has many young users so if you're in your twenties or early thirties then great. Anything older than that, then I cannot comment. I've had far more positive experiences using this site than negative. I've been a member since I was 18 (almost 22 now), a fan of the sites owners since age 13 (and lying about being 16). As a young person who moves a lot this is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people. Once again though, based on my experience, this site is more for the younger crowd.
@David Boarx Also, don't forget that the hide function is not a block function, and you can't block someone unless they send you an email...but if they IM you, make comments on your journal, etc...you can't block them, only "hide". So it really takes away 90% of the experience when you are dealing with 17 yr old stoned or drunk trolls.
Lots and Lots of immature people are attracted to this site for their silly and banal "tests". This is the big problem, and when you read the journals, most of them are by-and-large negative and slamming on the opposite sex. It is disproportionally heavy on the 18-24 year olds, who are all nasty, rude, and not serious about meeting someone. Plus, the site is politically left-leaning, with a focus on bisexuality, and their "questions" lead you to answer a certain way. This site also attracts a lot of cam-girl scams, fake profiles, and being that it is free, it doesn't filter out the losers. Not recommended. This site is no better than MySpace---way too many kids.
This is a great service.
why?
1) It's free, so okcupid doesn't have incentive to nickle and dime you, or even gasp, keep you from getting in a relationship to get you to pay for a membership longer.
2) they display how old profiles are, you can sort by last login, and profile newness
3) the match making system is pretty good if you are truthful about answering questions. This eliminates most spam profiles because they are below my rating filter.
4) they have a great blog telling you tips about online dating and overall statistics to design a better dating profile. Things like take pictures with a nice camera and don't make everything blurry.
5) they match people up who are relatively the same level of statistical attractiveness. If you have an attractive profile, you will be shown other more statistically attractive profiles. This means less clutter from people you would most likely find unattractive.
6) you can set up filters so creepy people outside your age range can't contact you
7) its simple to use
8) it has a great phone app for iphone or android
@Gregory If this was ever true, it no longer is. I'm a flag moderator and have no idea who the creators are.
Ok cupid sounds like a real nice site with plenty of ladies to choose from, but that is only the cover. Turns out most of the women tend to be very shallow, or have hidden agendas. A lot are professionals and attractive even, yet they are single, which also makes no sense. Lastly, no matter how polite you are, or how well formed you message content maybe, the response from the women on this site tend to be 50/50, even for very attractive people, it's still the same.
Biggest problem with the site is the moderators. Your profile can be flagged by them for any reason, even if you don't break the rules. Also they only give “flag moderation” privileges to friends of the developers of the site, and abuse is commonplace among the moderators. Had several profiles deleted for no reason other than not being liked by certain people, then when I asked about why, I was insulted and harassed.
Best thing to do is avoid this site all together, not to mention their popup ads are full of viruses, and Trojans. My computer was infected twice already.
OKCupid is not an attractive name. It's a mystery why the owners chose such a dumbening name to their website. As if less known sites such as AstrologDate or Single2.com better, but I'd say it's all fair games as long as not a scam.
First of all as soon as I signed up I was hit by a premium text scam - I was lucky I caught it I got hit for three astrology texts for $9.99 each I blocked them quickly or it could have been over $100 easily.
Then I spent what seemed like hours answering stupid... and I mean really stupid questions (I now call it OK stupid!) and really at the end of the day nothing has even come close to enticing me to message the so called matches.
All in all... OK Cupid is OK stupid!
There are no chat rooms. Which I don't miss. I tried a couple different chat rooms on true.com. Maybe it was a bad night but I didn't find the conversations engaging. Of course they do profile matching. That's what the match button is for. And they also give you 3 quiver matches daily as well. The match/friend/enemy percentages are a way to assess people as well. OKCupid does let you post journal articles. They encourage you as a matter of fact. And what's this nonsense about the age range being from 25-34? I'm 54 and found many people around my age. And one guy 60 as well.
