Zoosk
Zoosk, established in 2007, already claims to be the world's largest global dating community and is accessible in over 20 languages. It was created to work with social networks such as Facebook, Hi5 and Bebo but the service is also available on their website. Most features require payment in the form of a subscription or Zoosk coins. As a teaser, they offer a free upgradeable account that allows limited access to several features.
The Sign-up Process
Sign-up can be done the traditional way (create an account with your email, password, information, etc.) or by a Facebook log in. If you choose to use the Facebook log in feature, Zoosk will use your Facebook information to populate the forms which can be edited as you complete the sign-up process and will put the app in your Facebook page. It offers options to use your Facebook profile photo as well as your music, movies, books, and TV show likes which can save a bit of typing.
You will have the option to upload a profile picture (must be a headshot), your likes, text about you, basic details, and what you would like in a potential match. They also have a feature that allows you to ask friends to write a testimonial that will be uploaded to your profile. An additional aspect is the icebreaker question section in which you can choose from several questions so that other members will have something to respond to if they aren’t sure what to say. Most aspects of the profile creation stage can be skipped and returned to later.
Free version
This version will allow a member to establish a profile, use the search feature, and make and receive initial contact with other members. It is a convenient way to see if there are any interesting potential matches in your area, but nearly impossible to use as a means of real contact unless the account is upgraded to a paid version.
Paid Version
The paid version allows full access to all features on the site, although certain items and features will need to be purchased with “coins” that can be bought for an additional fee or earned through various surveys and other options.
Moderation & Safety
Zoosk moderates any images and text before they are posted to the website. Inappropriate or blurry images as well as contact information will not make it through the approval process which can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours.
As for security, while Zoosk can be utilized through social media sites like Facebook, it will not let other members have access to your Facebook page through its features. However if you do link to another account, do ensure that you fully understand exactly which data will be imported into your Zoosk profile, and of other aspects such as automatic “friend notifications” or information that may be posted on your “wall”, before you proceed.
The Community (“Zooskers”)
The profiles seem genuine for the most part. Most keep their messages short and have images that don’t look like they were cut straight out of magazines (no that isn’t code for they’re all hideous). The site is fairly active, so if you flirt with others chances are they will flirt back. Since Zoosk essentially sells positions in the front of the search your profile will not be immediately sent to the front for being new, so an avalanche of messages won’t arrive the first day you sign up unless you initiate contact yourself.
Features
Boosts: Have you ever wanted to hear “You’re not popular” from a faceless website? Well, you’re in luck. The site will regularly inform you of your popularity ranking which will be around 6,423,753 when you first sign up. Their solution? Buy “coins” (a form of site credit) and pay for a “boost” to get your profile onto the first pages of the search.
Text message alerts: If you would like free alerts sent to your mobile phone they offer a text message service that will send you notices when anyone tries to contact you through the site.
Messenger: Zoosk offers a downloadable messenger to connect, text chat, and video chat with other members. The messenger also provides popup notices when you have activity such as a wink or a new email. Members that have a free subscription will find out that they will not be able to see the messages sent to them and can’t send any in return. If a free member gets a message, the screen will show that the message was sent and suggest upgrading to read it.
On-Site email: This feature allows for sending messages back and forth between members. Members with free accounts may only send one message to each person, may only read one message from each person, and may find that if the message they receive from someone is long that the site will only show a preview of the first few lines.
For an extra fee (site coins), you can choose to find out if your message has been read or you can have it so your message stands out as a popup instead of potentially getting lost in the other person’s mailbox (this could give the other person the impression that you’re just a bit "desperate").
Winks, gifts, and friendship: Winks can be sent freely between all members. Virtual gifts need to be purchased with “coins” and can be sent along with a message by both free and paid members. Friendship is free, as it should be, and can be offered and accepted in the same manner as any social networking site.
Forum: Forums are usually a great way to met people without the stress of admitting right away that you might think their profile is entirely groovy. The Zoosk forum is not exception to this rule and has quite a healthy archive of messages. The downside is that it is currently inactive and has been for several weeks at this point. Maybe the moderator went on vacation and quit bothering to approve posts?
Find out who viewed your profile: This feature is pretty self-explanatory and is available to paid members.
ZSMS: The Zoosk's Scientific Matchmaking Service (ZSMS) is a survey supported compatibility program based on questions regarding member’s preferences in several categories including if they would accept a match that has children, what age they would like their match to be, religion, ethnicity, and more. It is essentially a version of the expanded search features already available on the site.
The Search: The basic search will show you men or women within a certain distance of the location you’ve set on your profile. Much like the ZSMS options, the extended search will show matches based on location, age, appearance, religion, ethnicity, if they have children, previous or current marital status, and a few other basic-to-all-dating-sites options.
Apps: There are Zoosk apps available for iPhone, Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, and Hi5 in addition to Zoosk’s stand alone messenger and text messaging alert features. The apps act like a “Facebook for dating” in that they will show you the recent activity, such as updated pictures or profiles, of potential matches in your area.
Coins: Coins are an additional purchase separate from membership fees. They can be bought or earned through various survey. With coins you can purchase add on features such as boosts, sending your messages with priority features, and virtual gifts. Zoosk is currently offering 17 free coins for liking their Facebook page; coincidentally it takes 20 coins to get a profile boost.
Pros
- Zoosk offers an active community, genuine people, and a chance to test the waters before leaping in wallet-first.
- Their special purpose “apps” allow easy linking with Facebook and other accounts.
Cons
- The free version is overly limited.
- The memberships in addition to coin-paid features make the company seem a bit money hungry.
- For those under the age of 20 there are restrictions on who you can search for based on age, essentially turning the under 20 crowd into its own section.
In Conclusion...
It is an effective site for meeting others and the people for the most part are friendly and open. If you are comfortable with sites like Facebook you will find yourself right at home at Zoosk, just expect to pay for the privilege.
When will i get my Zoosk-full refund? Signed up by mistake, fingers are crippled, could not hit delete, hit ok by mistake.
I would have given a higher rating if things would have gone differently. I first created the account in June and was already interested in one person in particular. Unfortunately, I wasn't familiar with PayPal so I decided to do the first payment by check, but the postal lock-out really delayed the payment processing. The person was no longer member a by the time, the subscription was completed (actually she left less than 24 hours before I was subscribed).
Twice since I've subscribed, I've sent e-mails to over 100 people, but among them only two did reply, but only once.
I would say, the period between late-September and late-October gave me a brief hope finally with this site, when three people expressed interest. Two of them had subscribed for a month and another one gave me her e-mail address.
After this brief period of hope, nothing for about 6 weeks, it's getting depressing and I seriously consider not extending the membership once it will expire. This site has been a big disappointment.
The big problem with the site is what some mentioned already is that the person you're interested in, must also be subscribed - They only have one chance. On my profile, I do put a semi-indication that I am a subscriber - still it doesn't help.
Seems, that each site has that one big problem that torpedoes many potential couple makings.
Unless something happens I'm not giving this site a passing grade.
Plenty of the members are just robot, fake photos and fake responses. When i simply tried to wink to same or different genders, the responses seem to be automatic with few pickup lines such as thank you for the wink, i appreciate your wink (read more) etc. They just want you to get subscribed to their site just to view the fake messages. The other party must subscribe in order to use the service. I will give this site NO stars if possible.
I have had 2 payments taken from my credit card by Zoosk.com London extra to the monthly subs. I am trying to get these refunded through my credit card provider Oct/2011. Three emails to Zoosk customer services have not had a reply! I noted that the 6 months subs had been set to continue without my approval/ knowledge on October 22 so I cancelled it totally.
I just deleted my account on zoosk. I didn't even bother to pay 30 friggin dollars or more just to talk to people who can't respond back because they would rather not pay 30 dollars either. Once I found out I couldn't read my messages I deleted my account. I find it funny they ask you before you officially delete your account why you are deleting it. That's kind of a stupid question considering they should realize by now they suck at managing a "friendly" dating site.
The advertising is very misleading, it is not free and they charge a $24.95 activation fee in addition to the monthly rate.
I happen to love your site it's great to email them and chat with them. i can joke with the best of them, i am very outgoing. i love to help people… if they needed the shirt off my back i would give it to them. So i would rate you a plus 10 and more. My name is martx so thanks again. i hope to get back some mail. Have a wonderful day and night.
I think Zoosk is a great place to talk to people and chat on i find it to be very helpful. I happen to love being on line talking to all the good guys you have on your site. I would rate you a plus 10.
I came across a lot of mens profiles that had their personal information on display in clear view for all to see...such as email address and full name. I tried to do the same thing because i don't want to pay the $30 for the one month membership but my info was deleted and half assed sentences remained so it appeared as though i know jack shit about the English language and i need proper grammar and punctuation classes. And i was an A student in my English classes in college!! Very frustrating!
I went on Zoosk and wasted two hours of my life. I heard of zoosk from a television ad. To complete the profile it required you to link to facebook to tell about what TV shows you watch, what sports you watch and what games you like to play. I tried repeatedly to explain in the main section these personal likes of mine to keep having it edited in a very poor manner that made me look like an idiot that could not put together a sentence. I have my spelling and grammar problems, but they are mine and therefore ok in my profile. As the profile had a spot for this information and I was putting in another "spot", I felt the need to explain why so a potential reader would understand I can follow instructions and am not a total idiot. I tried to say I couldn't link to facebook as I had no account there. I explained that I do not, and have never used myspace or facebook. Apparently this is a problem for them and simply kept editing my profile removing various parts of sentences that left gibberish. Nowhere did it say facebook was required. At no time did I diss facebook. It's this simple, my profile my words, Frick the natzi profile police, give me freedom of speech. The prices were outrageous. Try a free site like plentyofish or datehookup that allows you to represent yourself and does not force entry into your bank account to communicate.
There are some dating sites that just dont take off.But what if a site was filled with people from Facebook who just want a secret meeting?
I am a former Zoosker who has received a complete refund of my membership monies paid and released from my membership. A business decision on their part, left me unsatisfied with Zoosk after being a member for over 2 months and when they found they could do nothing to satisfy my complaint, they refunded my entire membership monies not a pro-rated amount as most businesses normally do. I may be the only one, but I have found Zoosk to be a company that cares about customer service who has gone above and beyond when they were faced with my dissatisfaction. To me Zoosk is not that bad or a rip off!! To the comment you can't reply to a flirt without paying a membership fee - have you ever heard the saying 'you don't get something for nothing'?
@Dawn Holderness Doesn't seem to be any support for problems. very dissapointed in zoosk.
I signed up for 1 month, and yet zoosk charged me again and automaticaly the next month.
I think this is the WORST online dating site I have ever used! When you get charges from them for an escort service in London you will feel the same way too.
I don’t like the fact that i have to subscribe to read my messages and chat with friends; it just makes me not want to waste my time being on Zoosk.
I don't understand what the deal is with the 29+ dollars a month that's just robbery. More like 5 bucks a month and you would have tons more clients. I for one will not pay that much for a singles site and not many I know will when there are free ones out there. Try lowering the price a lot and see what happens. Even if it were under 10 dollars a month on a non regen account.
Not a good dating site. Free membership is useless. It lets you see flirts, but after one exchange each, it blocks not only future messages, but previous messages as well. It will let you exchange phone numbers, but not emails. No one in their right mind would give phone numbers in the one (and only) initial message you are allowed to send?? It offers no trial membership. I assume because few would go past that point. There is no privacy in viewing other profiles. If you view someone, there is no way to block them from knowing. Therefore if you don't like their profile, you still are hounded with their responses. The dating pool seems very limited. After a few days (or right after you join), most profiles are either obviously fake, or very strange, undesirable people. The cost is extremely high considering they offer much less options/features than other dating sites. I'm also disappointed that you cannot use Paypal with the one month subscription, but only with the longer ones. If you DO choose to purchase a subscription and quickly decide to cancel, there is no refund and you are cancelled immediately (could be $100's of dollars wasted). Thank goodness though, I didn't pay for more than a month. Lesson learned! I give Zoosk a fat "ZERO". They apparently are spending all their money on advertising rather than creating a great site that can carry itself.
I was initially reluctant to join Zoosk because of its relatively high monthly price of $30 to try it out. But what lured me to take the plunge was the large number of local chicks posted. And I went ahead with a full-scale effort for three evenings in a row, messaging a total of well over a hundred females, ranging in age from 18 to over 40. I was respectful, and kept things short, telling them to please read my profile, then email me if interested, including my email address. The profile was worded pretty much the same as I had done on other sites, and it had generated a fair number of responses. Over 50 on AsianPeopleMeet, for example. But I got absolutely NO replies from any of my over 100 messages. So I must presume that Zoosk is just a site where women like to post about themselves, with no more seriousness about meeting people than posting comments on YouTube. So I will warn everyone looking to actually meet people to NOT waste your money. Try another website for that.
I will try posting this giving a ZERO stars rating. But if you see that I gave one star, that means I was forced to do so against my will. For, to me, zero replies to my messages warrants a zero star rating, agreed?
Glad to be a part of something worth while thank i love to meet people and share with friends.
